Davis Mills was drafted into the NFL as a third-round pick, chosen 67th overall in the 2021 draft. At 6'4" and 225 pounds, Mills demonstrated potential early in his career, particularly during his rookie year. Since then, he has alternated between starting and backing up C.J. Stroud. With the 2025 offseason nearing, there is speculation about whether the Texans should trade Mills or retain him in their quarterback strategy.

Davis Mills’ Career Overview

Mills made an immediate impact in his rookie year, completing 66.8% of his passes—a completion rate that ranked third in NFL history for rookie quarterbacks. He threw for over 7,000 yards across his career, primarily starting in 2021 and 2022, before transitioning to a backup role from 2023 to 2025.

One of Mills’ standout achievements remains his rookie year red zone passer rating of 113.2, which led the NFL. This shows his ability to perform under pressure in critical game moments.

In the 2025 season, Mills played in six games, completing 91 of 159 passes for 915 yards and five touchdowns. His completion percentage dropped to 57.2%, and he posted a passer rating of 81.6, ranking 33rd among quarterbacks that year. His success rate was 41.4%, placing him 37th overall. Despite these numbers, Mills maintained a respectable overall Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 64.0, with a passing grade slightly higher at 67.6.

Why The Texans Might Consider Trading Mills

Market Demand

Several NFL teams could benefit from a quarterback like Mills. The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly considering moving on from Kyler Murray, and Mills could be a solid option as they rebuild. The Indianapolis Colts, who are also in the AFC South, might see Mills as a valuable addition to their quarterback room. The Minnesota Vikings have been linked to Mills as well, potentially pairing him with their recent first-round pick, JJ McCarthy, to create a dynamic quarterback duo.

Value in Trade

If the Texans decide to trade Mills, they could receive draft picks or young talent in return. Given his experience and potential upside, Mills could attract interest from teams needing a reliable backup or a bridge quarterback. If the Texans can get a 3rd pick, which may be higher than what many teams would pay, a 5th rounder would be suitable as well.

Reasons To Keep Davis Mills

Experience and Growth

Mills has accumulated valuable NFL experience, including starting roles and backup duties. His rookie season showed he can perform at a high level at times, especially in critical situations like the red zone. Keeping him provides the Texans with a quarterback who understands their system and can step in when needed.

How Mills Fits Into The NFL Landscape

The 2026 quarterback class is expected to be weaker than usual, with teams like the Las Vegas Raiders likely to pick top prospects such as Fernando Mendoza. The New York Jets are rumored to pursue established quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa or Kyler Murray, making Mills less likely to land there.

Teams like the Cardinals, Colts, and Vikings represent realistic landing spots for Mills if traded. Each team has different needs and timelines, but Mills could fit as a starter depending on their plans.

What The Texans Should Consider

  • Trade Value: What offers are on the table, and do they match Mills’ potential value?

  • Roster Needs: Would trading Mills help address other areas of need on the team?

  • Development Timeline: How long will it take for a rookie or new quarterback to develop compared to Mills’ readiness?

Final Thoughts

Davis Mills has shown promise and resilience throughout his NFL career. His rookie season remains a highlight, and his experience makes him a valuable asset. However, his recent performance and the Texans’ status raise valid questions about his future with the team.

Trading Mills could bring in valuable assets and open the door for more draft picks, but it also risks losing a player with familiarity in the offense. The Texans must weigh their immediate needs against long-term goals to decide if Mills can garner future assets or if a fresh start is necessary.
